NHS Leadership Impact
Through the Leadership Impact days Julie has worked with a number of Exisitng leaders and new Clinical leaders, below are some of their comments about the day.
Andrew Lee GP and CCG board member
I was unsure about how much commitment I should be making to the leadership roles I have, particularly in commissioning after experiencing a series of negative outcomes from involvement in PBC. I found the coaching session thought provoking and inspiring and left with a renewed confidence that I have an important contribution to make and would regret not making it. I was moved by the feedback results. Subsequent developments have delayed some of my plans but I am actively involved in two leadership roles and continue to feel more confident about the role I can play both now and in the future. I found Julie to be an excellent coach. Her comments and questions were very perceptive and certainly lead to me exploring and sharing far more issues than I expected to. In particular, she helped me to see how I could make myself available for involvement in potential future roles without compromising values and ethics that are important to me, which I had previously regarded as a likely handicap.
Phil Pue GP and Chief Clnical Officer CCG The leadership-coaching day had a significant impact on my future role and me. I only had limited experience of any formal leadership development and I came to the day unsure of my leadership qualities even though I had had a fairly positive assessment against the NHS Leadership framework. I needed the assurance that I was a credible leader and that I could build on my strengths and improve my weaknesses. I was keen to develop as a leader but needed to understand where I was and how I could progress. The morning allowed me to be open and honest about myself and helped me to identify and understand my issues and challenges. These became clearer to me as the morning progressed and by lunchtime I had a good understanding and was feeling very positive about the areas I needed to develop. The exploration of my leadership styles was really useful and helped me understand my strenghts and weakness and how Icould use the different styles in different situations. It confirmed my perception of my main style but also identified other styles I wasn't aware of. The 360 feedback helped give me the assurance i needed and encouraged me to seek further Leadership Development, which took the form of Executive coaching, this incredible useful to tackle areas of difficulty and allowed me to be much more confident in my abilities to lead my organsation. I am now very positve about my future success in a leadership role and my increade confidence makes the role more enjoyable. Louise Clarke GP and clinical lead
I attended the development day unsure what to expect. I was very new to post and felt unsure how well I was doing in my role and how the people perceived me. The day helped me to clarify how others felt I performed and the level of pressure that I was imposing upon myself.
I learned from it the leadership styles that I used and how I can utilise these to their full potential.
The exercises helped to demonstrate the differences in my performance when I was confident in a task compared to when I felt less confident. This has been exceptionally useful for me when I am embarking on new tasks that I feel I know little about, and I have begun to trial different ways to get around this so that my performance is unaffected.
I came away with a very clear set of objectives which I had created for myself about the working habits I have slipped into, around taking time out and about setting my working day into an objective-focused task list.
Since doing this I feel that I am working more efficiently and effectively.
I also feel more confident in my own leadership skills and have removed some self-imposed pressure.
I have begun to utilise people around me more effectively and to try to do this in a way that gets the best out of them.
I am more conscious of taking on work myself that perhaps could be done by others, I am still working on ways to tackle this.
On the whole I thought this was one of the single most useful courses I have attended. I gained a huge insight into my own working processes and reflected on the skills I have and some working habits which are unhelpful. I feel much better equipped to do my job as a result.
